Origin and formation

The process of formation of the caldera began with violent eruptions that resulted in the expulsion of magma and ash, followed by a collapse of the terrain, creating a bowl-shaped structure. Over time, erosion and the volcanic activity of Timanfaya in 1730 contributed to define the current contours of this impressive crater.
Hiking route

The most common starting point is at Mancha Blanca, before finishing at Caldera Blanca. It is a 10-kilometre route that combines trail, track and asphalt to make it more challenging. However, the route is not too physically demanding, so it is a perfect route for anyone.
Starting point: Iglesia de los Dolores
The Iglesia de los Dolores, located in the charming village of Mancha Blanca, serves as the starting point for this exciting hiking adventure to Caldera Blanca. Surrounded by a picturesque and tranquil landscape, the church provides a serene setting from which hikers can begin their journey.
As you begin your hike, you can enjoy the views of the surrounding volcanic fields to mentally prepare yourself for the experience ahead. It’s important to recommend that you take hydration, a hat, sunscreen and suitable footwear to begin your adventure. Now you’re ready to set off on the trail that will take you to La Caldereta and then to the edge of the impressive Caldera Blanca.
Crossing La Caldereta
After about 1 kilometre of walking (30 minutes), you will reach the volcano La Caldereta. You are sure to find it imposing, thanks to its height of 324 metres and diameter of 300 metres. A positive aspect of this volcano is that it allows you to see the interior without reaching the summit, due to its shape.
Ascent to Caldera Blanca
After crossing La Caldereta, you can prepare yourself for the final part of the trip: the ascent to Caldera Blanca. On this stretch you will be greeted by a surreal landscape, with whimsical rock formations and seas of solidified lava that tell the story of past volcanic activity. In beautiful contrast, you will see greenish formations on many of the volcanic rocks, called lichens. These living things are a symbiosis between a fungus and an algae or cyanobacteria and have the ability to colonise and adapt to extreme environments.
This entire stretch is characterised by an unparalleled combination of colours. The whitish colours of La Caldereta and Caldera Blanca create a dreamy contrast with the black rocks and lichen formations. In addition, the brown of certain stretches of land complete the palette of colours that will make you feel as if you were in another world.
Arrival at Caldera Blanca
Finally, after an exciting hike, and approximately 15 minutes of ascent, you will reach the edge of Caldera Blanca. Here you will be greeted by the impressive view of the volcanic crater (of gigantic diameter of 1200 metres), its steep walls and its white ash-covered floor contrasting with the blue of the sky.
From this point, the views in any direction are breathtaking. However, if you want to enjoy the most exclusive views of this experience, we recommend you continue walking on the upper ring. There will be a point where you will be able to appreciate the sea and, with it, the Chinijo archipelago, made up of the island of La Graciosa and the islets of Alegranza and Montaña Clara. You will also have a spectacular view of the Timanfaya National Park and the already busy Caldereta.
