El Jardín de Cactus: Sanctuary of Thorns and Beauty on Lanzarote

On the Canary Island of Lanzarote, known for its volcanic landscapes, beautiful beaches and spectacular views of the Atlantic, lies a unique sanctuary of its kind: El Jardín de Cactus. It was the last work of the celebrated architect César Manrique and represents a testament to his artistic ingenuity, combined with his love of nature.

History and design

The Cactus Garden is a project that was born from the creative vision of César Manrique in the 1960s. However, it was not until 1973 that a timid beginning of the works took place, with the restoration of the millet mill and the walling of the surroundings. The start of the work was delayed several times before it was finally resumed in the late 1980s and completed in 1990.

The design of the garden is a masterpiece of landscape integration (environment) with architectural elements. Manrique took advantage of the natural features of the terrain and fused them with architectural, sculptural and picturesque elements typical of his style, such as the use of whitewashed walls, volcanic stone and the presence of water. The result is a captivating landscape that combines the exuberance of the plants with the sobriety of the volcanic environment.

As for the site for the Cactus Garden, César Manrique set out to transform an old quarry for the extraction of volcanic rock into a space dedicated to the conservation and exhibition of cacti from all over the world. Not only did he choose this site for its potential to house a variety of cactus species, but he also did so with the intention of rehabilitating an almost abandoned site and restoring its landscape value.

The cactus collection

The Cactus Garden houses an impressive collection of more than 500 different species of cacti and succulents from all over the world. From the deserts of America to the arid regions of Africa, each plant finds a home in this garden to flourish and be admired by visitors.

The more than 4,500 specimens, with their whimsical shapes and varied tones, are the undisputed stars of this botanical oasis. Among the species to be seen are the “giant” candelabra (Euphorbia ingens), 7 metres high, perfect for photography. Curiously, this was the first one planted by César Manrique in 1989. You will also find the popular and indispensable “mother-in-law cushions” (Echinocactus grusonii), so called because of its size and cushion shape.

On your visit, you will also find other varieties, such as the nopales (Opuntia ficus-indica) and the golden barrels (Ferocactus glaucescens). Each one of them brings its uniqueness to the whole, creating an unparalleled visual spectacle. Best of all, each species has its own description with name and origin, which is great for learning more about them.

Gastronomic experience to complement the visit

In addition to its spectacular natural beauty, the Cactus Garden offers a unique gastronomic experience in its restaurant, where you can delight in a selection of dishes inspired by Canarian cuisine. You can try the delicious papas arrugadas con mojo (wrinkled potatoes with mojo sauce), as well as the local goat cheese.

Despite the varied culinary offer, the “highlight” comes from the incorporation of the cactus itself into the cuisine. You’ll have the opportunity to try the honeyed cactus croquettes, the chicken and cactus rolls, or the vegetarian cactus, millet and potato burger. You can also accompany your meal with a selection of Canarian wines, which perfectly complement the flavours of the regional cuisine.

In the Jardín de Cactus restaurant you will not only enjoy exquisite food, but also Manrique’s artistic creations. These include the symbolic mural and the very special lighting with lamps in the shape of cactus leaves. The panoramic view is also spectacular.

Normal ticket and “unusual” ticket

You will have 2 types of tickets to visit the Cactus Garden: normal and “Unusual Experience”. The regular ticket costs approximately 8.00 EUR (adult), while the Unusual Experience ticket costs approximately 35.00 EUR (adult).

The normal ticket allows you to visit the garden, mill, restaurant, shop and pond as normal. The Unusual Experience consists of a guided tour with a small group and at exclusive times. On this tour you will learn every detail and curiosity about its construction and you will learn about Cesar Manrique’s vision and way of creating. At the end you will enjoy a tasting of appetizers with local products and Lanzarote wine.
