Best Beaches in Lanzarote: Ultimate Guide

Welcome to Lanzarote, a volcanic gem in the Canary Islands, where the beauty of the beaches meets the drama of unique landscapes and warm, consistent weather. This island, known for its fascinating mix of golden and dark sands, is a perfect destination for beach lovers, sunseekers, families, and adventurers alike. Whether you’re here to soak up the sun with family or to explore wild, untamed shores, Lanzarote’s beaches offer something for every taste and activity.

The Perfect Beach Weather All Year Round

Lanzarote’s climate is one of the island’s greatest treasures, offering warm temperatures and plenty of sunshine nearly every day of the year. Known as the “island of eternal spring,” Lanzarote enjoys an average temperature range of 17-24°C (63-75°F) in winter and 24-29°C (75-84°F) in summer. Thanks to the Atlantic Ocean’s cooling currents and the prevailing trade winds, the weather rarely becomes uncomfortably hot, even in peak summer months. These breezes also make the island a prime location for water sports like windsurfing, kite surfing, and sailing.

This mild climate means that any time of year is ideal for enjoying the beaches in Lanzarote. During the cooler months, many visitors come to escape colder climates and enjoy the warm sands and gentle sea temperatures, which stay invitingly between 18-22°C (64-72°F) throughout the year. With such reliable weather, Lanzarote’s beaches are the perfect escape, offering the ideal environment for both relaxation and adventure.

A Unique Blend of Golden and Volcanic Sands

Despite Lanzarote’s volcanic origins, the island is home to an impressive variety of beach types, with more golden sandy shores than dark, volcanic sands—a notable difference from neighboring islands like Tenerife and Fuerteventura, where black sand beaches are more prevalent. This unique blend means that visitors can enjoy a range of beach experiences, from traditional golden sands that give a classic beach feel to black sand beaches that echo the island’s volcanic history.

The golden beaches, such as those found in Playa Blanca or Costa Teguise, provide a classic setting for sunbathing and swimming, while the dark sandy shores offer a surreal, almost otherworldly experience that feels uniquely Lanzarote. This contrast adds to the island’s charm and ensures that there’s always something new to discover along its coastline.

Beaches for Every Taste and Activity

Lanzarote’s beaches cater to all types of visitors, making it easy to find a spot that suits your preferences, whether you’re here with family, on a solo adventure, or looking for a romantic retreat.

Family-Friendly Beaches

For families, Lanzarote offers a selection of beaches with calm waters, soft sands, and convenient access to restaurants, shops, and other amenities. Locations such as Playa Dorada and Playa Flamingo in the south are ideal for families with children, providing safe swimming conditions and all the services you need for a comfortable day at the beach. These urban beaches offer a lively atmosphere and are surrounded by facilities that make family outings easy and enjoyable.

Adventure and Water Sports

If you’re a lover of extreme sports, Lanzarote has a variety of beaches known for their rugged beauty and ideal conditions for adventure. The island’s consistent winds and waves attract windsurfers, kite surfers, and surfers from around the globe, especially to beaches like Playa de Famara. With vast stretches of open sand and powerful waves, these beaches are perfect for those looking to catch some waves or try a new sport.

Protected Natural Beaches and Conservation

Lanzarote is also committed to preserving its natural beauty, with several protected beaches and areas of ecological importance. The island’s dedication to conservation is evident in places like the Papagayo beaches, a group of stunning coves within a protected natural park. Here, visitors can experience pristine, untouched sands and crystal-clear waters, making it one of the island’s most cherished spots for those who want to connect with nature.

In addition, Lanzarote has several areas where visitors can appreciate the native flora and fauna that thrive in its arid climate, including unique bird species, sea life, and desert plants that contribute to the island’s extraordinary biodiversity. Conservation efforts on the island are ongoing, ensuring that these beaches remain unspoiled and accessible for generations to come.

The Papagayo beaches are located in the municipality of Yaiza in the south of Lanzarote and belong to the tourist centre of Playa Blanca. You can reach them on foot in just a few minutes if you are staying in one of the hotels.

They extend for five kilometres and are divided into small coves known as Playa Mujeres, Caleta del Congrio, El Pozo, Puerto Muelas and Papagayo. Each of these areas is framed by low rock walls.

These beaches always have good weather, so you will enjoy a great day with plenty of sunshine and little wind. From the beach you can see the neighbouring island of Fuerteventura and the islet of Lobos.

Water sports

If you are passionate about the sea and its charms, you must come and visit the Papagayo Beaches. If you want to work up a sweat while enjoying the sea, we recommend walking along the shore of the Papagayo beaches. But if it’s the sea you’re looking for, we’re waiting for you to go diving, swimming and snorkelling. Enjoy the water and explore the seabed of Lanzarote’s most popular coastline.

Peace and Relaxation

Because of their small size, the coves provide safe environments for children, who enjoy splashing in the water and building sandcastles.

You can lie on the sand to sunbathe and relax. This is a wonderful relaxation therapy that doesn’t compare to the best spa in the world. You will be in the middle of a paradisiacal landscape, feeling the refreshing wind on your face and hearing the gentle hum of the sea. This is undoubtedly an extraordinary experience for all your senses.

Papagayo Beach

Playas de Papagayo - Lanzarote Beach (2)

This is one of the most beautiful beaches of the group and the one that gives it its name. It forms a small inlet between two cliffs, creating a perfect setting for relaxing and enjoying the sea.

It stretches for 120 metres in length and about 20 metres in width, where you will find fine golden sands and crystal-clear waters that remain almost motionless. It is a perfect beach for exploring the seabed.

It has a parking area and a camping area, as well as a beach bar where you can stock up on food and drinks. Nudists and non-nudists alike flock to this beach.

Playa Mujeres Beach

This beach stretches for 400 metres of white sandy beach. It offers calm waters and spectacular scenery. Because it is so wide, you won’t have to worry about finding a serene and quiet spot.

Los Ajaches Natural Monument

Playas de Papagayo

The group of beaches of Papagayo belongs to the Natural Monument of Los Ajaches, which means that it is a sensitive area that must be preserved. For this reason its access is limited to non-residents, who must pay 3 euros to enjoy its waters.

How to get to the Papagayo Beaches

If you go by car, you must go to the valley of the Los Ajaches Natural Monument, where there is a hut to control access. But if you decide to get there on foot, you must take the San Marcial del Rubicón trail, which starts in Las Coloradas and takes you first to Playa Mujeres and then to the rest of the beaches in the complex.
